Self-Deception and Distortion

Tomas Maguire • 17 May 2005

In the early 1990's the Sinn Féin leadership, in a series of internal discussions, postulated that a broadfront of opinion namely the American, Irish Governments, The SDLP, The Trade Unions and left leaning governments in Europe would be sufficient a dynamic (with Sinn Féin leading the charge) to persuade the British to face down the orange card of unionism and begin a process of 'defacto' withdrawal from Ireland. This is one of the basic tenants of Gerry Adams' well meaning Peace Strategy and is, in my view, arguably one of its fundamental flaws, particularily when you consider one of its outcomes. The Sinn Féin championed Good Friday Agreement clearly copper-fastens partition, a fact that even the Sinn Féin chairman Mitchel Mclaughlin admitted to a British parlimentary committee last year.

The British as the primary power brokers here for their part I believe have always had their eye on the bigger prize. Their Normalisation and Crimalisation policies were abject failures in attempting to defeat Irish Republican militant resistance in Ireland but, third time lucky, in persuing a 21st century doggedly skillful twin track 'neutralisation' policy, they have simultaniously neutralised the potency of militant resistance to their presence here while positioning themselves internationally as neutral non-partisan brokers.

Meanwhile, what has really changed militarily here in terms of their presence? They've rejigged their base presence while still maintaining their obnoxious troop levels and illegitimate occupier status. Yet they are careful not to rattle the natives too much, so much so that the war-weary burn-out Danny "I no longer belong to Sinn Féin or the Irish Republican Army but I'm still a republican sympathiser" Morrison can argue casually, 'the border between the Irish Republic and Northern Ireland has practically melted away,' going on to say, 'there are no soldiers breathing down our necks, our homes are not being raided, it can be done peacefully.' (see "Forget Rifles, Focus on Votes in N.Ireland-Morrison," Reuters.co.uk, 16/05/05)..... Really Bangers? I find the capacity for self deception and distortion of these 'former' warriors astonishing. I often wonder did they ever 'really' believe in anything they went to jail for?!!

Meanwhile, the Brits plot and plan regardless, with their insidious 'centrally controlled security and intelligence developments for the six counties such as the recently revamped prevention of terrism act and the entrenchment of organisational sovereignty by the home office and MI5 in relation to the north.' (see "Master of Intelligence", Daily Ireland 17/05/05)

In essence, the direct rule status quo is a political 'stagnation' (Mr Adam's latest adjective) the 'Neutral' British can very easily live with; they'll be in no hurry to restore anything other than the paintwork on their CH-47 chinooks in these parts ... and why not? After all, we'll be waiting a quare while for Banger's generation et al to physically challange anything ever again. As per the betrayals and sellouts of yesteryear, Adams et al have shamefully bequeathed the national liberation struggle to a future generation of Irish Republicans ... and yet 'ar agaigh go deo, ar agaigh don phoblacht' (Séanna Walsh Bobby Sands memorial lecture) they cry without an ounce of personal affront!!!

Their reward will be the slaughter of our children.

All censorships exist to prevent any one from challenging current conceptions and existing institutions. All progress is initiated by challenging current conceptions, and executed by supplanting existing institutions. Consequently the first condition of progress is the removal of censorships.
- George Bernard Shaw
