"Rumour Mill" - Safeguarding Nationalist Community

Sean Mc Aughey • 21 June 2004

The most recent day light incursion into the Lower Ormeau by more than 30 masked loyalists and last week's paramilitary style attack that left one nationalist youth requiring hospital treatment as he and his friend were walking home pass the "Gasworks" has many locals on fullest alert. Particularly, when such attacks are largely unreported in the media or readily dismissed as the start of the "Silly Season".

And according to locals, a community "rumour mill" is fast becoming their only "reliable" source of information about the growing loyalist attacks against members of the community. Because, nationalists they say, believe that a media play-down on unionist violence exists to create an image of a peaceful Orange marching season.

Last Tuesday (15th June 2004), 2 Lower Ormeau youths were set upon and beaten by more than 4 known loyalists, who emerged from a van in the Gasworks Complex wielding baseball bats and iron bars.

Ironically, one of the loyalists involved in this attack is also believed to be a Youth Leader who recently attended a local cross community weekend involving youth living in the communities at the South Belfast, Lower Ormeau / Donegal Pass interface.

All censorships exist to prevent any one from challenging current conceptions and existing institutions. All progress is initiated by challenging current conceptions, and executed by supplanting existing institutions. Consequently the first condition of progress is the removal of censorships.
- George Bernard Shaw
