The
conviction of peace activist Mary Kelly, Galway,
in Ennis District Court yesterday (Thursday, October
28) was deplored by the President of Republican
Sinn Fein, Ruairi O Bradaigh.
She
is in the tradition of anti war activists
such as the Berrigan brothers in the United States
during the Vietnam war. They burned draft cards,
damaged official files and spilled animal blood
in government offices to protest and demonstrate
their principled opposition to a colonial war.
Similarly
Mary Kelly stood her ground after she had damaged
a US warplane using Shannon airport in an allegedly
neutral State. She sought to demonstrate her opposition
in a most pointed manner to the involvement of the
Irish people in an imperialist and illegal war.
Hers
was an act of passive resistance and all peace loving
people must support her stand.
