Following
the recent publications of the Cory and Barron Reports,
I have to ask the question, do republicans really
believe that the truth will come out of the Public
Inquiries which British Prime Minister, Tony Blair,
has ordered into the deaths of Rosemary Nelson, Robert
Hamill and Billy Wright? Or, that a Public Inquiry
will ever be ordered into the Dublin and Monaghan
bombings by the British Government, even if they were
asked to do so by the Taoiseach.
The harsh realities are that the British politicians,
the army and the PSNI, are completely unconcerned
about the way in which they waged their dirty war
in Ireland. If history has taught us anything about
the British establishment and especially the legal
system, it is that if you happen to be of republican
or nationalist persuasion, then, the last thing you
can expect, is any form of justice. The cases of the
Birmingham Six and the Guildford Four clearly highlight
this.
Even if we look at the Saville Inquiry into the events
of Bloody Sunday, the one thing which has shone out
like a beacon, has been the attempts by the M.O.D
to undermine and ultimately sabotage the proceedings.
They have taken the inquiry as a direct attack on
themselves and their minions and continually blocked
legal attempts to release official files pertinent
to the inquiry, by hiding behind the Official Secrets
Act. Indeed, if we consider that there is immunity
from prosecution, and the huge numbers of the security
forces who gave evidence, I would have thought that
at least one person's conscience, might have been
pricked and the relatives of the victims would have
some form of truth.
Also, if we look at the Stevens Inquiry into collusion.
It seems to have dragged on for an uncountable amount
of years, (probably, about six, it just seems longer)
without any announcement of prosecutions.
The fact is that the Cory report itself, is an indictment
of collusion on the part of the security forces, but,
equally, the people who carried out this strategy,
still hold power within the police and army and will
do everything within their power, to stop the true
story from being told.
So, although I hope that the truth will come out in
the inquiries, I do not believe it will happen.
Firstly, I think that the British had an awful lot
more of the security forces involved with the illegal
loyalist paramilitaries, (and probably still do) than
they would ever want revealed.
Secondly, I do not believe that the British secret
machine, would allow any inquiry to find out how far
up the chain of command, the decision to implement
such a plan would go.
What do you think Mrs T.?
