Only Another Eleven Palestinians

Margaret Quinn • March 17, 2003

I heard on the lunch time news today (March 14) that Israeli Occupation Forces had killed another eleven Palestinians over the past twenty four hours.

It was a short report, about twenty to thirty seconds in length, giving one the impression it was virtually an afterthought .... a throwaway line, meriting little, if any, attention.

Unlike suicide bombings, which frequently result in fewer casualties, there was no sense of urgency, no dramatic film footage, no scenes of devastation or frantic rescue efforts, no grieving families and friends, no bleeding bodies carried from the rubble - and not even one name.

Why? Why such blatant disparity in reporting? Are Palestinians less "human" than Israelis? Are their deaths less "important" and, thus, less newsworthy? And what does it say of our society, indeed, our humanity, that we unquestionably accept this unbalanced reporting of the Palestine-Israel "conflict"?

Only another eleven Palestians killed, to add to the over 200 others ALREADY killed by the Israeli Occupation Force since Jan. 2003. Only another eleven Palestians killed, to add to the over 2,500 others ALREADY killed by the IOF since Jan. 2001.

Only another eleven Palestinian casualties of Israel's illegal, inhumanely brutal, 35 years long occupation of Palestine. An occupation that kills, maims, denies Palestinian children education, suffocates with continuous curfews and road blocks, demolishes homes and agricultural land daily, humiliates and starves - all in contravention of Human Rights laws, and in breach of about 80 United Nations Resolutions.

But it's only Palestinians, so who cares? Well, actually, I do, as do numerous people like me. It's time for us to stand up and be counted. Silence is NOT an option when the annihilation of an entire People is taking place right in front of our very eyes.

Follow the path of the unsafe, independent thinker. Expose your ideas to the dangers of controversy. Speak your mind and fear less the label of 'crackpot' than the stigma of conformity. And on issues that seem important to you, stand up and be counted at any cost.
