The Blanket - A Journal of Protest & Dissent

No War On Iraq

Davy Carlin • 9/1/2003

Following the million-strong march against war in Florence last November, a gathering of the social movements who had organised that protest issued the following statement:

‘To all citizens of Europe! Together we can stop this war! We are fighting for social rights and social justice, for democracy and against all forms of oppression.

We stand for a world of diversity, freedom and mutual respect. We believe this war, whether it has the backing of the UN or not, will be a catastrophe for the people of Iraq - already suffering because of the embargo and Saddam Hussein’s regime - and for people across the Middle East.

It should be opposed by everyone who believes in democratic political solutions to international conflicts because it will be a war with the potential to lead to global disaster. There is a massive opposition to war in every country of Europe. Hundreds of thousands have already mobilised for peace.

We call on the movements and citizens of Europe:

  1. To start organising now against war.
  2. If war starts to protest immediately and organise demonstrations in every country the next Saturday after the war starts.
  3. To start organising now for demonstrations in every capital in Europe on 15 February.’

We are asking for the support of individuals and organisations for this statement and to help organise major protests in both Dublin and Belfast on Saturday 15 February, to coincide with the international day of action. Please add your name or that of your organisation to the list of sponsors and help us build a mass movement that can halt this dangerous drive to war.

Follow the path of the unsafe, independent thinker. Expose your ideas to the dangers of controversy. Speak your mind and fear less the label of 'crackpot' than the stigma of conformity. And on issues that seem important to you, stand up and be counted at any cost.
- Thomas J. Watson
