A Way Out of the Impasse

Liam O Comain • 9 December 2004

The scenes of handwringing by all those who have left the nationalist cause and become partitionist was pathetic after another failure at Stormont in the last few days.

As one ex- provo said to me if they cannot get it right in relation to surrendering weapons how will they ever work together to rule the north on behalf of the Brits?

However there is one way out of this impasse and I offer it not because I support the Belfast Agreement as you well know but because I have sympathy with those who were disappointed with their expected Christmas box from Ian and Gerry. For all those who wish to see the latter two dancing hand in hand down the corridors of power persuade Gerry or Martin to allow big Ian to be the Protestant Clergyman who will witness alongside a Catholic Priest the provos final act of surrender. I'm sure this should not be a problem for an organisation that has sold out every republican principle in the wanton pursuit of political power.

As for the big man if he refuses this will confirm once and for all if the DUP are supporters of the Belfast Agreement. And if not then perhaps the Brits will make plans for military and administrative withdrawal from our country.

All censorships exist to prevent any one from challenging current conceptions and existing institutions. All progress is initiated by challenging current conceptions, and executed by supplanting existing institutions. Consequently the first condition of progress is the removal of censorships.
- George Bernard Shaw
