Fr
Sean McManus might better have understood my book
on the IRA if he had ignored the religious analogy.
It may well be the case that Ruairi O Bradaigh is
a classicist and Gerry Adams believes in historical
consciousness. If what Fr McManus is trying to say
is that O Bradaigh believes in holding to principles
and Adams elevates pragmatism, he may well be right.
But what has this to do with my book?
What
I was trying to do as far as modern Irish republicanism
is concerned was to ask the equivalent of this question,
one that has more relevance to the Catholic church,
I submit, than arcane debates about Vatican 2. The
question is: who has been humping the altar boys,
for how long and who lied about it?
