Commission of Truth Needed, Says O Hara

Peggy O Hara, the Independent Republican candidate for Foyle, calls for the establishment of a Commission of Truth

Press Release • 18 February 2006

I view the RUC/PSNI as irreformable. In fact the whole mechanism of the British created state-let is irreformable, and needs to be dismantled layer by layer.

The RUC/PSNI has, since the murder of Samuel Devenney in 1969 through the heyday of its torture centres in the 1970s and 1980s, and barefaced collusion with murder gangs continued its conspiracy of silence. This is very evident in the wake of the recent disclosures of collusion issued by the Omdurman's office.

Can anyone doubt that the targeting and murders of leading H Block / Armagh committee members like Noel Lyttle, Ronnie Bunting, Miriam Daly, John Turnly and the attempted murder of Bernadette Mc Aliskey (as British Paras looked on) were sanctioned at the highest level with Thatchers approval?

These are only the tip of the iceberg. They must be held accountable. And accountability does not begin by joining the very regime that committed these acts.

We are a society emerging from a regime marked by grave and serious violations of human rights faces the complex challenge of how best to deal with the past. The establishment of a Commission of truth has helped several countries through this process.

And we are in a unique position to learn from these and improve them. This can then be used as a model to help others on a global scale.

Justice must be a prerequisite for reconciliation.

The Commission of truth must be set up on an all Ireland basis.

There is no such thing as a dirty word. Nor is there a word so powerful, that it's going to send the listener to the lake of fire upon hearing it.
