The Blanket - A Journal of Protest & Dissent
In Memoriam David Ervine
(1953 - 2007)

Marcel M. Baumann • 8 January 2007

(Below are some quotes from an interview with David in June 2001. David's words speak for themselves and need no comment. They will never be forgotten. Tears don't cry.)

"So I would say that it is one of natures' inconveniences that the hard-talking Richard Nixon was the president who could go to China. It could be argued that the nature of politics and the relationship of politics and violence in a divided society is that out of anger, brutality and bitterness, I think comes an acknowledgement and an action and reaction that says 'We've got to stop this!' It is a little bit like saying: 'Been there. Done it. Bought the t-shirt. Don't advocate anybody else does!'"

"My reasoning for wanting prisoners released wasn't because I have some sentimental attachment to prisoners because I was once a prisoner myself. If we are going to the beauty parlour then we can't come out of it with wards on our nose."

"Since I've never experienced childbirth, the most painful experience I ever had is self-analysis. When you are confronted with circumstances that you have to give thought to, and you consider, as I did, that part of the thought process that I previously had was one of utter, shameful simplicity. Now, how is it that we hate people we don't know? How is it that we can live with ghosts and myths and shibboleths whilst having no credibility whatsoever or foundation to our touchstones of what passes for political policy or political philosophy? Of course, is that a political philosophy at all?"

Rest in Peace, David!

Marcel teaches Peace Studies and Nonviolence at the University of Freiburg in Germany. He holds an MA from the University of Ulster (Magee College) and a PhD. There is no such thing as a dirty word. Nor is there a word so powerful, that it's going to send the listener to the lake of fire upon hearing it.
