Basque Americans for a Special Envoy Press Release Mark J. Guerry • 14 May 2007 Twin Falls, Idaho.  May 18, 2007 Inspired by what Irish-Americans have done for the Irish peace-process, Basque-Americans are now calling for the appointment of a U.S. Special Envoy for the Basque Country and Spain.  “One of the key things Irish-Americans did to further American help for justice and peace in Northern Ireland (and the whole island of Ireland) was to successfully lobby for the appointment of a Special Envoy,” explained Mark Guerry, an attorney of Basque ancestry in Twin Falls.  “At first, the proposal was vehemently opposed by the British Government and the U.S. State Department, but Irish-Americans persisted.  And that Envoy, George Mitchell, went on to provide invaluable service to the Irish peace-process.  And although we are fully aware that the Northern Ireland issue is different from the Basque issue, nonetheless the fundamental principle is the same: Many Basque-Americans, like Irish-Americans, want to help their homeland.  And the Special Envoy is the most effective way to demonstrate and implement American concern.  Who could possibly be opposed to this?  And if they were to be opposed, what would their motives be?” The Basque group, suitably named Basque Americans for a Special Envoy, has already been in touch with Fr. Sean McManus, President of the Capitol Hill based Irish National Caucus, which for over 30 years has played a key role in getting the U.S. Congress to work for equality, justice and peace in Northern Ireland.  The group has also written to Larry Craig and Mike Crapo, Senators and Mike Simpson and Bill Sali, Representatives, for Idaho.  It is also contacting those members of Congress active in Irish affairs, including Senators Ted Kennedy and Hillary Clinton, to enlist their support for the appointment of a Special Envoy.  Likewise it is contacting all the Presidential candidates.   Mark J.
